He had an older MacBook Pro and had upgraded it to Monterey. The one other person who called into Apple had the same issue (but with a different display). So the only time I have an issue is when the external display is classified and the Main Display (and has the menu bar) while using the MBP as a second display - which is how I have operated ever since having external displays attached to PowerBooks and MacBook Pros for 20+ years. I also closed the MBP and just ran off the external display, and that worked fine. Then I reattached the display, but opened Display Preferences, and made the MacBook Pro display the Main Display (showing the menu bar there instead of the external). During the call with Apple, I disconnected the external display and everything worked fine.
